Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Busy Weekend Ahead

January is already proving to be a busy month and it is only the 6th day of it!

Running after Sunday's marathon has been non-existent. (I could have run on Monday as I felt the best that I've had after a 30K or greater - maybe because the heat and humidity kept me from wearing out my legs as much perhaps, but I had plenty to do and had family over for an early turn-out-to-be birthday celebration.) However, I hit Bally's today after getting in from Indianapolis this morning for a challenging hour and 45-minute cardio workout. (As I've stated before, it is a mental pick-me-up and for me, it works!) The 45 minutes was spent on the elliptical trainer going at level 15, random at 4.46 miles. That's on par for almost 6 miles for my typical hour workout.

I had to go out to the truck to take a conference call for work and when I went back in, I spent another hour on the stationery bike cranking out a little over 21 miles and tried to make sure that I kept the rpm's on the level 6 random setting between 90 and 100 the entire time.

But I need to make it more challenging and get with a personal trainer to do some weight work to start toning my upper body. (I'll be talking about goals or - rather, in my mind - needs for the upcoming year in another post this weekend.)

My project in Indiana will end next week and despite the great people that I've become acquainted and come in contact with, it will end none too soon. The very cold weather, with stiff winds -at times - and precipitation, is very uninspiring and saps any desire to do much of anything after hours. (Plus there were two football games - notably Penn State's win over Florida State and the USC-Texas contest.) I'll be in Atlanta the week after - from the 17th to the 19th - for some additional system training and will then be in a position to start a project in Vancouver, British Columbia. (I may have a down week or two.)

What's on schedule for the rest of the weekend?

Friday
+ New non-running tennis shoes (although I don't plan on playing tennis anytime soon.)
+ Register Waverly and myself for the Rockets Run at Luke's Locker on West Gray
+ Go to two high school basketball games of the Lone Star Shootout at Westbury Christian HS tonight

Saturday
+ 10 miles in the morning at Memorial Park with the Striders. (Probably going to start at 6:30 a.m. with Jessica.)
+ Come home, shower and referee three (3) basketball games at our church at 11 a.m., 12 noon and 1 p.m.
+ Watch Waverly play at 2 p.m.
+ Come home again, shower and take her to see the HBU Huskies women's team play Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. (We went to San Antonio last Friday to visit their former coach who is now an assistant for Colorado State University's women's team.)

Sunday
+ Go do the Rockets Run 5K downtown and socialize with all of you fine folks who are planning on doing the same!
