Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

60 Finish First 2 HARRA Spring Series Races

Whereas 97 runners completed the five (5) individual races of the 2005 HARRA Fall Series, just 60 of the 167 participants in the Buffalo Wallow 6K toed the starting line for the Park to Park 5-Mile Run on Saturday.

The runner with the lowest overall cumulative time - 46:03.8 - belongs to 28-year-old On The Run Racing team and Bay Area Running Club member John Hedengren. He has won both events. The top five is rounded out by fellow racing team members Rudy Rocha (2nd) and Sam Rodriguez (4th), Ramiro Alvarado (3rd; winner of the 25K) and Gerardo Mora (HMSA; 5th).

The men's Masters leader - and 8th overall - is Terlingua Track Club's Rich Fredrich, 48, with a two-race cumulative time of 52:19.9. Jay Hendrickson, 52, of the Bayou City Road Runners leads all veterans - in 11th overall - with a time of 54:30.5.

31-year-old Erin Foley of the Terlingua Track Club leads all female runners with a two-race time of 59:50.0. Rounding out the top five are Anna Helm, 40, of the Bayou City Road Runners; Karen Bowler, 56, of the Houston Striders; Houston Masters' Eva Luckey, 50, and Bayou City Road Runners' Bonnie Jo Barron, 44.

In what could be a prelude to their sixth Spring Series Team title in the last seven years, the Bayou City Road Runners have 20 of the 60 runners who have completed both races. 53 of the 60 are HARRA members. Rounding out the club breakdown are the Houston Striders and the Houston Masters Sports Association with 7 each, Bay Area Running Club with 5, Al Lawrence Running Club, Terlingua Track Club and runners with no affiliation with 4 each while the Tornados Running Club has two (2).

The next race in the 2006 HARRA Spring Series is the RRCA National Championship 10K, the Bayou City Classic, to be held on Saturday, March 11, 2006 at 8:00 a.m. in downtown Houston.
