Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

RunSport Friday Night All Comers Track Meets

(I had a request from Bret Ramsey, who does Run The Woodlands 5K quite a bit, for this information, plus Sam Rodriguez is planning on running in this this evening.)

RUNSPORT Friday Night All Comers Track Meets
@ Rice University Track Stadium
June 2, June 9, June 16, June 23, June 30, July 7

Schedule: This is a rolling schedule. Occasionally special events will be run at a specific time each week. An exact schedule will be posted each week with any additions and changes. All events are fastest heats first followed by slower heats, and, if necessary, women first followed by men.

Field Events: 6:00 p.m. -- Long Jump then the Triple Jump
(For other field events contact the meet director at least 3 days in advance)

Running Events:
6:30 p.m. -- 110 Hurdles and Mile Race Walk
7:00 p.m. -- 400 Hurdles, 100 Meters, 800 Meters, 400 Meters, 200 Meters, 1500 or Mile Run, 3000, 4 x 400 Relay

We will run a 4 x 100 relay at 6:00 PM if teams desire. Please let meet organizers know by 5:30 p.m. if a team wishes to run. IF NO ONE HAS CONTACTED THE MEET ORGANIZERS BY 5:30 p.m., THE EVENT WILL NOT BE HELD.

Entry Fee: $7.00 per person. Unlimited events.

Event Heating: All events will be heated at that event's starting line. There will be three calls for each event. After the third and final call all those who wish to compete in a given event need to be at that event's starting line to be seeded and placed in a heat. If anyone is not there after the third and final call you may not get a lane in the heat you wish.

Results: Results will be posted as soon as possible after the completion of each event. If possible they will also be on the Internet at flashresults.com

For more information: Contact Darrel Robinson at drobin@rice.edu or 713-348-8861
OR Jon Warren at jhwarren@rice.edu or 713-348-6021

These meets have two purposes: One is to provide all those interested in track a fun, safe place to compete and, the other is to allow for all competitors to post their fastest or farthest marks possible. All of the workers and volunteers are here to aid and promote track and field and to provide individuals with a much-needed opportunity to compete. If you have any questions or comments concerning these meets they should be directed to the meet directors. Thank you, good luck and have fun.

These meets are great. In addition to the terrific local runners we have, you'll occasionally see an Olympic caliber athlete show up to run. I know Sandra Glover has run one of these on more than one occasion, and a friend of mine showed up one night to run the 800 or the mile, and Michael Johnson was there. My friend quickly signed up for the 400 just to say he compteted against Johnson. I encourage anyone with time and interest to go out and at least watch one, even if you don't want to enter.

Everyone should run at Rice at some point. These are great meets. They are low key enough for the average person to enjoy and yet they are offically timed and you will see national and world class athletes from time to time.

Just think...800 meter PR Friday night(Rice)...5K PR Saturday morning(RTW) - total cost for both $8.00

(or inculde two or three events Friday and log a bunch of races in a week. The $7 fee is to access the track...you can run as many events as you want for the $7)
