Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Karnazes vs. Armstrong

It will be Dean Karnazes' last marathon of a 50-day, 50-state, 50-marathon quest this Sunday at the ING New York City Marathon.

It will be Lance Armstrong's first career marathon with hundreds of thousands of people watching!

Will Karnazes go out and make sure that he doesn't get beat by Armstrong?

The six (6) races that Karnazes did not do with charity runners, such as Houston's own Keith Kelleher, went like this - in order:

3:50:52 - Lewis & Clark Marathon, St. Charles, Missouri
3:46:56 - Boulder (Colorado) Backroads Marathon
3:44:12 - Portland (Oregon) Marathon
3:20:04 - St. George (Utah) Marathon
3:28:19 - LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon
3:37:27 - Marine Corps Marathon

Everybody seems to think that Lance will hover around the 3-hour mark for his marathon debut.

And they may not be far off the pack as Armstrong will be paced by three (3) running legends:

10 miles -- Alberto Salazar, the last American winner of the New York City Marathon in 1982
10 miles -- Joan Benoit Samuelson, the first Olympic women's marathon champ in LA in 1984
6 miles -- Hicham El Guerrouj, the reigning Olympic 1,500- and 3,000-meter champion

The trio will reportedly try to keep Lance at a 7-minute per mile pace.

Care to chime in on this one?

And you have just over 24 hours to still get in on the "predict Lance's time in NYC" contest!

My prediction is 2:47:47. We shall see ...

I missed Karnazes in the Marine Corps Marathon, which I also ran (3:56:54). Beautiful day and beautiful course.

Congratulations!

MCM was my first marathon 2 years ago ... so I didn't "enjoy" the beautiful course as I was just worried about finishing.

Another cyclist who ran it last year ran it in under 3 hours. I would think that Lance doesn't want that guy to have beaten him on the race course when he got him on the bike.

Who knows.

I just hope that NBC doesn't waste too much time on Lance. With the fields assembled on both the men's and women's side, it's going to be a terrific race--there are several people in each group who could legitimately win.

It'd be nice to peek in on his race from time to time, but extended coverage would be like ABC showing a B'ham Barons game in lieu of a MLB playoff game so that we could watch Jordan ground out to the pitcher.

OTOH, it will be nice to see Salazar, Joanie, and El Gerrouj out for an easy jog.

Laurent Jalabert was the cyclist. He ran 2:59 in Chicago this year, too.
