Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Crunching Numbers from the 30K: Part 1

There were 805 finishers at today's Methodist Sugar Land Hospital 30K - the last race in the Marathon Warm-Up Series.

I just got done looking at the complete lap splits which were posted for 792 of those finishers. There were four laps (or loops) -- the first and last ones were 5.1 miles each while the middle two were 4.2 miles each.

I've always been curious as to whether runners improve their pace on each loop or if they've gone out hard and faded slowly as the race went on.

65 runners - 8.2% - improved their minute per mile pace with each loop
122 runners - 15.4% - had their minute per mile pace get slower with each loop

The 10 fastest finishers who improved their pace each lap?

5. Larry Millard, 1:48:57.6
29. Simon Brabo, 2:05:18.2
31. Raul Valdez, 2:05:23.1
36. Jose Reyes, 2:07:43.2
49. John Hill, 2:10:40.6
55. Robert Hahn, 2:12:43.2
57. Amy Rounkle, 2:12:54.6
65. Scott Wonderly, 2:14:13.8
66. Eric Stotzer, 2:14:15.5
67. Scott Bounds, 2:14:22.7

How impressive were the victories of Brett Riley and Heidy Lozano of almost four (4) and seven (7) minutes, respectively, over Vidor's Michael Defee and Galveston's Autumn Ray? Both runners had the fastest lap in each and every lap!

259 runners - 32.7% - had a negative split on the back half of the course.

The best negative splits on the day?

19:38 -- Craig Bluerock, 359th overall, 2:55:01.0
15:06 -- Jennifer Wilson, 766th overall, 4:02:06.5
13:56 -- Alicia Balderas, 729th overall, 3:45:47.5
12:47 -- Jon Shaffer, 439th overall, 3:02:14.9
12:02 -- Scott Neal, 379th overall, 2:57:02.7
11:35 -- Delia Akers, 641st overall, 3:25:25.0
11:18 -- Jerry Fugate, 496th overall, 3:09:28.0
10:39 -- Rebekah White, 240th overall, 2:40:22.7
10:39 -- Scott Wonderly, 65th overall, 2:14:13.8
10:38 -- Mike Crowley, 66th overall, 2:14:14.4
10:37 -- Eric Stotzer, 67th overall, 2 :14:15.5
10:31 -- Scott Bounds, 68th overall, 2:14:22.7

Three (3) runners did both the Pearland Jingle Jog 30K last Saturday and the Sugarland Methodist Hospital 30K today. They are as follows:

Brian Gomez, 31, Houston -- 2:25:13 last week, 2:39:59 today
