Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Friday Morning Treadmill

Yes indeed, Jackson, Mississippi threw me for a loop for two days. My apologies for those of you who checked in the last couple of days with no updates. So sorry to disappoint! :)

It was too late when I got in last night to make it to the gym, and Waverly was out shortly after I got in the door at about 10:15 p.m. There's a one-mile loop that I can even if she's sleeping, but I've only ever done that one time (and it isn't something that I care to do too often).

So I was up and at the gym by 7 a.m. to knock off an hour on the treadmill at Bally's - all at 4.5 mph. I may try to push it up to 4.6 mph tonight or tomorrow.

Then again, tomorrow - I may just rest and go hang out at the Heights Fun Run 5K - before running a half marathon in Temple on Sunday morning. Should be fun. It'll be interesting to see if they get any type of crowd with Jeff Galloway being there.

And for me it will be half marathon no. 50!

Waverly's been released from physical therapy and has been in volleyball camp the last two days. I dropped her off this morning, and she has another day of camp tomorrow.

I talked to her on the phone on the way home last night and she told me that she was pretty wore out Wednesday night because she hasn't been active the past two months while she was going through physical therapy. I'm proud of her though for going out and trying to continue to hone her skills enough to make one of the eighth grade teams next year.

She'll have challenges ahead of her though as the better players are playing junior and select volleyball; however, you just never know. If she works hard enough, stays healthy and has fun, she may be able to continue to play. It's all up to her and what she wants to do.

She's got a busy summer ahead of her. Here's her schedule for now:

June 12-19 - Tyrone, Pennsylvania to see my grandparents with my parents and two nieces
June 21-29 - San Francisco, Los Angeles and Western States 100 with me (We're staying in downtown San Francisco for two nights, in Pasadena for four nights and with Rick on Friday night before WS100)
July 4 - Red, Hot and Blue Festival in The Woodlands to see Rodney Hayden (probably will go run Stu's Country Mile in Centerville that morning)
July 13-19 - Teen Church Camp at Horn's Creek in Tennessee
July 26 - 1st annual Rodney Hayden Festival, McCoy, Texas (When she sees this, it will be the first that she knows for sure about it!)
August 4-5 - Spring ISD Leadership Camp

Listening to: "Just Another Day In Paradise" - Phil Vassar
