Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Run The Woodlands 5K #139 Race Report

Wow! What cool temperatures do to a man's ego! I had a really good run this morning with a 5K of 29:29.32 at Run The Woodlands 5K #139. (I was going to try and double my pleasure and go to Brenham for a 3-mile cross country race at 12 noon, like I did last year, but I decided against it as I had results to get done.)

14 runners set new personal course records today including one of our own - Holden Choi, who rattled off a 26-minute even effort! Houston Striders' Brett Riley and Thomas King went 1-2 as Brett nailed down a 16:20 while Tommy came in at 17:15.

Not only did I run well, I ran consistent. I got a little bit of that mental toughness back and improved on it a little bit. A lot of times I'm spent at mile 2; however, today, I felt relaxed as I looked at my watch and saw 19 minutes. I knew that I would have to maintain my pace, but with the cool temperatures it was pretty easy to breathe instead of carving through the humidity.

Here are my mile splits:

Mile 1 - 9:23.53
Mile 2 - 9:46.19 (19:09.72; 3rd closest times between mile 1 and 2 all year)
Mile 3 - 9:38.25 (28:47.97; first negative split between mile 2 and 3 all year)
Last .1 - 41.35 (fastest last tenth of a mile since May 12th Tie One On For Charity)

Total - 29:29.32

My good friend, Debbie Tripp, who usually negative splits and passes me in the end, didn't get me today. (I really, really think that the orange shirt does get the female runners fired up.)

I knew that Debbie was running with Tom Pinney and his dog, Khobar, after Khobar got done with a drink in the lake just before the mile 1 marker. After I made the turn at the 2.3-mile mark back on to Crown Ridge Drive, I could hear Tom behind me, but I just didn't know how far back they were.

Debbie did a really good job of remaining in stealth mode until about the 2.95-mile mark. I glanced over my left shoulder and saw her there. I went a few yards, saw the mile 3 "blue dot" on the pavement, hit my watch and then took off in the fastest sprint that I could.

The 41.35 last tenth of a mile would equate to just under a 7-minute mile! Yeah, right!

The complete Run The Woodlands 5K #139 race results can be found here.

So I really feel good about things and am looking forward to a good long run tomorrow. I might be ready for New York City after all -- or as long as it stays cool. (The 10 a.m. start doesn't thrill me if it gets warm.)

That's what I like to hear, Jon. I knew that all the reports this weekend were going to be stellar. It's a good thing. I was getting so depressed reading about everyone's SC 10-miler reports. :) I think God gave us the cooling reprieve just as we all were about to crack! lol Thanks for the good report.
