Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Family Trains Together For Marathon

Waverly Walk and her father John have been running together for a year and a half. In January they will be running the Aramco Houston Half Marathon during the Chevron Houston Marathon.

"In September my dad challenged me. We started doing 3.5 miles and increased it a half-mile every weekend," said Waverly.

"On Tuesdays and Thursdays I train on a 2.1 mile loop in my neighborhood," she added.

Waverly is 10 years old. She is in the fifth grade at Abercrombie Academy in Spring. Her favorite subjects are history, math and science. Waverly is active in other sports, too; she plays basketball for her church team.

"When I grow up I want to play in the WNBA," Waverly said with a smile.

"Exercise is important. I like running because I meet new people. Most of the time I am the youngest person in 5K runs. I run for the fun and experience, not necessarily to compete with anyone but myself. My best 5K time was 39.38," said Waverly.

The 2006 Chevron Houston Marathon is Houston's largest single-day sporting event. The marathon is combined with the Aramco Houston Half Marathon and the Houston Press/Smart Financial 5K race. More than 18,000 participants will take to the streets on January 15, 2006. For more information about the race or to register, visit www.chevronhoustonmarathon.com.

"I am really looking forward to the race. It is 13 miles, but my Dad will be there to help me, if I need it," said Waverly.

(The highlighting above was added by me. Otherwise, this is exactly how the article appeared. I gave her a hard time about the very last part: "...if I need it!" She responded like the typical athlete, "I never said that!" A 10-year-old already claiming she was misquoted. And for those who were in attendance at Run The Woodlands 5K when she PR'd with a 37:12, she was intereviewed by the reporter prior to that. -- JW)
