Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Sorry Jessica, It Was 9.582 Miles!

Jessica Alexander and I met up at the Power In Motion meeting spot near the Memorial Park Swimming Center to get in our "10" miles before the Aramco Half Marathon.

I was flying down Interstate 45 to be there at 6:30 a.m. However, I called her and she was pulling in shortly behind me. We hit the Loop at about 6:35 a.m. for a 2.9-mile jaunt at a quick training pace for me of 9:44/mile (or 28:13.05).

After 20 other Striders SMART members waited for us in the parking lot - discussing the post-run breakfast location - to get started (thanks Steve and crew!), we headed out on the "River Oaks" route to the River Oaks Country Club to where we were going to turn around.

We really had a chance to talk quite a bit about a wide range of subjects and actually got into an area where we were running by ourselves. So much so that we missed the right hand turn off of Blossom onto Sandman and went all the way to Shepherd. (So ... we added a little distance!)

Our complete route looked like this: http://www.harra.org/Route.asp?MapID=848

Since I live up here on the north side of town, the only time I run this route is on a Striders group run. Therefore, I think the reason why the distance was 6.682 miles (instead of the 7) is because we didn't do Tiel Way loop coming and/or going. We did this distance in 1:10:27 for a pace of 10:33/mile. Actually, driving home, I thought it was a slower pace than that as I was really worried that I slowed Jessica down.

Therefore, we had a total running time of 1:38:40 for 9.582 miles - a 10:18/mile pace. A good active run for me and a nice easier pace for Jessica as she prepares for the Half Marathon next Sunday. We talked about her chances for a sub 2-hour, which would be right at 9 minutes per mile. I think they are quite good; however, I pointed out to her that regardless of what her time is that this would be her race distance PR. Quite an accomplishment in itself.

As a friend and a fellow runner (and blogger), I'm really proud of the job that Jessica has done over the last six (6) months. If there isn't a better testimony of what the Striders SMART training concepts, as well as Power In Motion, can do for a runner that is committed to do the work, I'm not sure who it would be.

My mileage for the week, which sucks because it could be more: 35.8 miles.

Jon!
It was a great run and a fine pace for me...remember my right arch and hamstring were acting up anyhow so I needed to run that pace with you. You were actually in front of me quite a bit:) Your training has been rocking too, 35 miles this week--more then i have done yet! Can't wait to see you next Sunday! (yes, i slept in today!)
