Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Nine (9) Run Mardi Gras/Surfside in 7 Days

I - pictured with Seven Hills Running Club president Ken Johnson in the picture to the right - wasn't the only crazy one in the bunch!

50 States Marathon Club member Steve Boone, 56, of Humble (who also completed his 300th marathon in Houston nearly a month ago) was the only one of the nine (9) runners to improve their time -- by nearly 5 minutes -- from the Mardi Gras Marathon to the Surfside Beach Marathon. It was Boone's 5th marathon of the year.

Here are the cumulative times of the nine (9) runners who did both marathons:

7:21:01 - Michael Pentland, 43, Houston (3:34:04 at Mardi Gras; 3:46:57 at Surfside)
7:54:24 - Royce Sayer, 64, Oak Ridge, TN (3:36:33; 4:17:51)
8:36:43 - Steve Boone, 56, Humble (4:19:16; 4:14:27) -- 302nd career marathon
10:49:07 - Steven Stinemetz, 48, Houston (5:06:28; 5:42:39)
10:52:21 - C.E. Goudeau, 52, Denham Springs, LA (5:10:00; 5:42:21)
10:53:32 - Jon Walk, 39, Spring (5:13:37; 5:39:55)
11:27:01 - Lou Wilson, 69, The Woodlands (5:38:07; 5:48:54)
12:40:43 - Paula Boone, 39, Humble (5:51:55; 6:48:48) -- 164th career marathon
12:42:04 - Laurence Macon, 61, San Antonio (5:53:16; 6:48:48) -- 233rd career marathon

While Boone was the only runner to improve their time, Wilson, Pentland and Walk were the next best as far as having times slip the least. Wilson's declined by 10:47, Pentland's by 12:53 and Walk's by 26:18. (Wilson's other two marathon times in 2006 were 5:49:31 in Kingwood and 5:48:50 at Chevron Houston.)

Of the runners aforementioned, Macon (who ran 79 marathons in 2005) has already completed 9 marathons so far this year. Paula Boone and Wilson have finished four (4) each while Walk, Pentland and Stinemetz have done three (3) apiece.

How much training did Macon (79 Marathong in 2005) do in between races?
