Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

San Antonio Marathon Notes

Before I point you to Sean Wade's blog for his report of the San Antonio Marathon, I want to congratulate my friend, 30-year-old Keith Kelleher, of Pasadena, who finished his 2nd Texas marathon of the '06-'07 season with a 4:29:06.7 finish in his quest to complete the Texas Marathon Challenge. (Read Keith's blog to find out that his run with Dean may not count.)

Sean's blog entry can be found at http://www.kenyanway.com/blog
. (His report confirms an e-mail that I received from one runner who saw Sean walking or jogging in mile 23.)

Houston-Area Notes

Having always run well in San Antonio, 47-year-old Suzy Seeley was listed as the second Masters finisher in 3:24:44.7 (although two other 40-and-over runners finished in the top five). Fellow Houstonian Robin Proctor, 43, was behind Seeley in 3:26:40.9 just as she was earlier this year at the Seabrook Lucky Trails Marathon. Seeley won in Seabrook while Proctor was the first Masters finisher at that race.

20-year-old Huntsville resident and Seven Hills Running Club vice president Nikki Swearingen finished just 8 minutes, 22 seconds away from a trip to Boston with her 2nd place age-group finish of 3:49:21.0. It was her first marathon since 2005 when she ran the hp Houston Marathon in 4:22:18.

A couple members of the Tornados Running Club - 34-year-old Juancarlos Vielma and 41-year-old Francisco Garza -- finished 22nd and 23rd overall in 2:57:56.9 and 2:58:32.7, respectively.

Fort Bend Fit's Susie Eisenberg-Argo, 45, won her age group in 3:53:10.6. Also winning her age group was 51-year-old Yong Collins in 3:53:13.7. Speaking of consistency, Collins ran the ING New York City Marathon last Sunday in 3:53:10.

Three weeks after running the La Salle Bank Chicago Marathon in 3:18:35, Seven Hills Running Club and Al Lawrence Running Club member Rose Rhoton was 2nd in her 40-44 age group and 13th overall in 3:28:45.

Former Houston Chronicle running columnist Patti Muck finished 6th in her 45-49 age group in 4:02:32.3 four weeks after running Marathon 2 Marathon in Alpine, Texas in 3:59:39.

HARRA member Dunbar Chambers III finished in 3:49:31.9.

Additional Houston-Area Notes

Spring's Ray Boytim, 74, ran his fastest marathon of 2006 with a 4:53:20.9. He was third behind 71-year-old Daniel Shuff of San Antonio (3:57:56.3) and 75-year-old Jesse Real of Corpus Christi (4:26:52.6).

It was Shuff's 4th sub-4 hour marathon this year. His best time was 3:49:25 in February at the Freescale Austin Marathon. His slowest of 14 marathons? Two weeks ago at the Marine Corps Marathon with 4:11:47.

Hewitt's Cliff Burgess, 68, finished 4th in his age group with a time of 4:32:40. It was his 4th marathon since October 21st and 11th this year. It was his 2nd fastest of the year behind his 4:12:58 performance at the Chevron Houston Marathon.

Behind Burgess was Rosenberg's John Fredrickson, 68, in 4:54:45.9 . It was John's sixth marathon of '06 as he finished the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon in 4:55:31.

General Notes

Head-turning time of the day belonged to Mexico's 55-year-old Mariano Lopez Salazar with a time of 3:13:25.1. Three years ago as a 52-year-old, he ran the San Antonio Marathon in 3:06:15.1.

The "Running Reinas", Texas' ruling running family, were out in force once again. Leading the way was 46-year-old Randy, who finished 27th overall in 3:03:23.5.

Former U.S. Olympian in the 5,000 meters and three-time 5A UIL state 1,600 meter champion Rueben Reina, 38, finished in 3:17:35.2. The current Springdale, Arkansas cross country coach still holds the 3rd and 5th fastest UIL state championship times in the 1,600 meters.

Roland, 43, ran it in 3:30:08.2 while their sister, Janice Reina Cerda, 42, finished in 3:42:47.6.

50 States Marathon Club member San Marcos' Gina Moore, 55, who ran her 100th and 110th marathons in Boston in '05 and '06, respectively, finished 2nd in her 55-59 age division in 4:13:12.9.

Akuma Bethuel and Eric Etheridge were 5th and 6th in 3:16:24 and 3:16:54 back in April at the Big-D Texas Marathon. Today, they were 12th and 37th overall in 2:52:44 (1st in 25-29) and 3:12:30.2 (5th in 35-39).
