Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Sunday Night Training

Dad upset the training apple cart a little bit despite some good intentions!

The original training plan from back in September would have put Waverly at 9.5 miles this weekend; however, I've been mixing it up a little bit to keep it fun and pleasant and not just adding more and more miles mercilessly as we went on.

Last week was a busy week for her. Two 1-mile events, a 5K and 10.3 miles last Sunday night.

So this week needed to be a bit easier. She didn't run on Tuesday to give her ankle time to heel up. She had basketball practice Thursday night and then a game on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. where she played excellent defense despite having two elbows in her back all five of the quarters (out of six).

After her game was over, we came home, got cleaned up and drove to Waco where we went to see a good friend of mine, Plano Prestonwood Christian head football coach Mike Hall, guide his Lions football team to a perfect 14-0 record with a TAPPS Division III state championship win over Houston Northland Christian, 46-14, at Floyd Casey Stadium. Waverly got to spend the entire game on the sideline of a Big 12 football stadium, which she found pretty cool. I reminded her that my Dad and my grandfather gave me the same types of opportunities when I was her age and younger even.

We stopped and got a bite to eat in Waco, filled up with gas, drove back and didn't get home until 1:30 a.m. The plan was to get up at 5:30 a.m. (ha! ha!), drive to Memorial Park and do three (3) loops for 8.7 miles. Well, Dad was worn out and didn't even set the alarm. (I got up at 8 a.m.)

She played with a friend in the afternoon after helping around the house (getting ready for Saturday). We headed to Memorial Park Sunday evening, despite a downpour around Greenspoint Mall, at about 7 p.m. Three (3) loops was still in the plan changing directions each time.

We got there and got through two (2) miles and the bottom fell out of the skies and we took rescue underneath the roof over the HARRA bulletin board, which needs to have its club listing updated. (There were four clubs on there that I've never heard of before or have barely seen mentioned since 1999.) Once the rain subsided enough to make it back to the Mile 0 marker (where the truck was), we took off for the last mile. She covered the loop in 36:37.20. However, I didn't get my watch started right away so I'll call it 2.85 miles because I hadn't seen the 3-mile marker.

We waited to see if the rain was going to back off at all. It didn't so we headed back north.

Once we got past Greenspoint Mall on Interstate 45 North, the rain had subsided and we agreed to another 2.1 miles in the subdivision to call it "5" for the evening.

So her times were as follows this evening:

2.85 miles -- 36:37.20 -- 12:51/mile (39:49 5K pace)
2.1 miles -- 28:51.45 -- 13:45/mile

The biggest key of the evening though? She slow jogged/ran the entire "5 miles" and didn't walk at all.
